It was the 2nd beginning of man, when Jupiter ruled the heavens and earth with his wife Hera, the goddess of marriage. They had many beautiful children: Mercury, messenger god; Vulcan, god of forge; Athena, goddess of wisdom; Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty; Mars, god of war; Diana, goddess of the hunt and protector of the animals; and many more. However, this was because Jupiter had many mistresses and women encounters. Juno would always find a way to wreak havoc on these women Jupiter had affairs with. The goddess also envied some of his daughters, but she envied one in particular, more than anything. Juno sought to destroy the young goddess.
One spring day, Jupiter was walking along the shores of Italy and came upon a beautiful palace. The palace of king Nephteus, he ruled over Italy at the time with his queen Elizabeth. Elizabeth was known for her great beauty and passion for others. She honored the gods and had shrines built dedicated to them. However, the Queen could not bear children. She constantly prayed and showed her gratitude to the gods in hopes they’d give her a child. At this time, Nephteus was away at war with another country and Elizabeth was left alone. Jupiter found the lonely woman in her garden weeping on her knees. He called to her and made his presence known. Elizabeth reverently bowed to the god and kissed his feet. Jupiter kissed the woman’s head and spoke “I have heard your prayers and felt your grief. Come, lay with me, and you will bear a child”. Elizabeth, too afraid to question or deny the god did upon which she was asked. Afterwards, Jupiter gathered his belongings and left her palace without a word. Nine months later a beautiful girl was presented into the world. She resembled Elizabeth greatly with dark brown curls, mocha skin, and hazelnut eyes. The child was named Bette, meaning “God’s promise” and a variant of the Queen’s own name.
When Juno learned of her husband’s infidelity she sought to have the baby destroyed at once. Jupiter stopped his wife and said if Juno was to harm either the queen or Bette he would punish the goddess. Juno, very intelligent and wicked, had other plans for the baby when she got older. She would challenge Bette everyday of her life until the demi-god begged for mercy. Juno would make it so the girl would want to die.
Bette wasn’t a normal girl. As she got older she began fighting with the boys outside of the palace in combat and play. The young girl begged her mother to let her possess a sword to practice combat and Elizabeth relented. Bette trained alongside of her older cousin, Avestus, a great warrior. Avestus was surprised at how well the young girl could maneuver with such speed and great dexterity. By the time Bette was a teenager she could out run the warrior and match him in sword battles. She was a truly gifted child with superhuman force and quickness. Those were not the only great attributes she contained, Bette possessed intelligence and wisdom. Athena had instilled these gifts in her sister when she visited Nephteus’s palace at Bette’s birth. Zeus was dumbfounded by his daughter’s many talents she possessed: strength, wisdom, and beauty. She was the perfect combination of all three, not a man could defeat the warrior or be worthy of her. Elizabeth worried her daughter would never choose a prince or settle down with one. Bette just wanted serve her people and fight in wars in her mortal father’s army. Nephteus knew his daughter’s passion to serve her land and what immortal skills she possessed. Bette would be the greatest warrior the world had ever seen. Armies would tremble at the Greek army with her on their side. However, women were not allowed to serve in the armed forces and Nephteus could not grant Bette’s wish. Her duty was to stay in the palace and prepare herself to choose a prince that would rule beside her as king one day. The young warrior didn’t want to marry a man or settle down. She wanted more than that. Men were mindless killers with no concept of emotions or love. Bette couldn’t picture herself married to an ugly bearded man and bearing his children. However, she had her eye on someone though. And the story begins…
One day Bette was training with her cousin Avestus in the valley. They were by the sea dueling with their swords. Bette was merely 18 years old and Avestus was still no match for the young warrior. She swung her sword around swiftly blocking her cousin’s offense and darted behind him. Avestus spun around on the back of his heals his sword swiping near Bette’s knees. The brunette sprung into the air dodging the attack and came down behind Avestus. She quickly locked her elbow around his throat and held the sword to his neck. Avestus smiled and spoke unto the brunette “Very well cousin, not even I am a match for you.” Bette beamed with gratitude and released her hold on her cousin replying “I thank my father and the gods. Have they not gifted me with such powers I would not be the warrior I am today. Also, you have taught me well Avestus.” Avestus patted his younger cousin on the back “Such modesty. You’ll make a fine warrior and I hope to fight alongside of you one day.” Bette’s features dropped as she stared at the sword in her hand sadly “Nephteus denied my wish to fight with the Greek army. He said my duties where to remain in the palace and prepare for marriage. Avestus, I want more than that. I was born to honor my homeland and the gods in battle. I was born to be a hero” she said dimly. Avestus gave the brunette’s shoulder a firm squeeze and a reassuring smile “If it is your destiny you’ll find a way to be a hero and your name will be known for centuries” he replied. Bette nodded and hugged her cousin thankful to have such a caring mentor. They looked at the setting sun and Avestus knew it was time he got back to the palace with his own family. Avestus parted from the beach and walked on towards the palace. Bette sat on the shore watching the sea lap the sand and wept “Poseidon, your sea carries my tears, hear my cry for mercy. I am the daughter of Zeus and sibling of Athena, Aphrodite, Mars, Diana, and Vulcan. Let my cries be known that I may fight for the gods. I was born to be a hero.” The brunette wiped her tears and set off back to the palace.
As Bette walked through the village she heard a scream coming from a nearby alley. She gripped her sword firmly and cautiously walked to the alley she had heard the scream. The warrior came upon drunken men laughing and cursing as they pushed around a young maiden, 15 or 16 years old. One man grabbed hold of the young blonde girl who wore nothing but a robe and fondled her waist down to her legs. She fought furiously but was no match for the strong man. He was about to strike the maiden when Bette drew her sword and pounced forward alarming the men. The drunken men drew their swords unaware it was their princess and made sneers towards her. “Well, looks like we’ll have two ladies joining our party tonight men! We’ll have fun with this one!” a man shouted and stepped towards Bette daringly with a drawn sword. The brunette smiled wickedly as she moved with great speed and sliced into the man’s leg.
The other men watched in shaken horror as she picked up a burning log and tossed it their way. She hissed to the frightened men and took off her helmet “You are fools to ever cross me again or torture a woman. I am Princess Bette, daughter of Zeus and Queen Elizabeth; you will be punished for your vile ways”. They released the blonde maiden and scurried away in fright. Bette slowly approached the scared girl and she backed away frightened by the warrior. “You do not need to fear me. What is your name?” Bette asked. The young girl spoke softly and hid her face in shame as she was in the presence of royalty “Tina” she replied. Bette brought the girl on her feet and lifted her chin gently staring into the blonde’s hazel eyes, she was breathtakingly beautiful. “You do not have to bow. Did they hurt you in any way…?” Tina dropped her face to her feet so the warrior would not have to see her battered features and shook her head. The blonde had been badly beaten but that was all, just cuts and bruises that would heal in days’ time. Bette felt her heart cringe at the sight and she wished she’d killed the men who did this to this beautiful woman. “Come with me back to the palace. I’ll have my servants tend to your wounds and cater to your needs” Bette said and tenderly grasped the girls hand. Tina shook her head and lifted her eyes to meet the brunette’s “Your highness… I couldn’t… I’m not worthy…” she stuttered over her words. Bette smiled and placed her hand on the small of Tina’s back and motioned her head towards the palace “Consider it an order. Come on.” Aphrodite looked down upon her sister and smiled, she knew Bette’s fate; it was all panning out as Aphrodite had predicted.
Bette brought Tina to the palace and her servants attended to the maiden as the brunette had requested. Elizabeth was touched by her daughter’s generosity but skeptical of her intentions. Bette had never been so cautious and caring towards another human as she was with Tina. Elizabeth saw a twinkle in her daughter’s eye whenever she looked upon the blonde. The Queen questioned Bette’s motives and suspected the brunette’s feelings were deeper than just pure kindness. After the servants had tended to Tina and she ate, the blonde slept for three days. When she awoke Bette was placing a tray of fresh fruits and meats beside the bed, this alarmed Tina a bit as she quickly realized where she was. “Forgive me your highness! I have over stayed my welcome, I will be on my way” Tina said and jumped up from the bed. She noticed she was clothed in a fine green dress fit for a princess herself. “Your robe needed to be cleaned. My servant helped you change into this while they washed your cloths. I hope you do not mind” Bette replied. The warrior was in her gold suit that consisted of a skirt, bronze breast plate, and knee high boots. Her sword tucked safely in its holder and her bow secured around her back. Tina couldn’t help but smile and shook her head “Not at all, this dress is lovely, thank you.” The brunette admired Tina’s beauty and modesty; she was too beautiful for the life of a peasant. “Come dine with me and tell me about you” Bette insisted. The blonde blushed slightly and nodded then followed the brunette into the garden where the servants had prepared dinner. Bette was the one who broke the silence as they ate “So, tell me, why where those men pushing you around the other night?” Tina sighed and dropped her eyes to the table replying “I was searching for a place to spend the night and those men captured me.” Bette blinked stunned, the girl was homeless? Where were her parents? “You’re certainly not old enough to be on your own. Where are your parents?” the brunette asked. The blonde held back tears as she searched for the words to say “My father died while away at war and my mother was killed by a band of thieves. They burned our house to the ground and I was lucky to escape. I was 14 years old then, 2 years ago, and I’ve been on my own ever since.” Bette was stuck with great sorrow for the beautiful girl; she wished she could end Tina’s pain. “The world is a cruel place and is not for a beautiful girl like yourself to be wandering about” Bette replied. Tina blushed again she had never felt so cared for in her life. “I get along just fine” the blonde replied. Bette lifted her eyebrow “So, the fact I had to save you the other night doesn’t support that claim at all?” she asked teasingly. Tina popped a grape into her mouth and grinned “I would have eventually handled them myself. I’m a very capable woman, your highness” she answered. Bette chuckled and leaned back in her seat, she liked this woman “I’m sure you are Tina.” Tina looked the brunette in the eyes “Thank you for saving me, your highness.” Bette waved her hand in the air “Please, call me Bette, and it was my honor to save you.”
For the next few weeks Bette coaxed the blonde to stay another day every time she began to leave. Tina felt like she was intruding in on the warrior’s life but couldn’t deny Bette’s plea for her to stay. They became very acquainted with each other and Bette found herself never wanting to leave Tina’s side. Bette cracked open the door to the blonde’s room and found Tina washing her face. “Hey, I was wondering if you would like to accompany me on a walk to the beach” Bette asked. Tina dried her face and slipped on her sandals then followed the brunette outside of the palace. Elizabeth watched from the window of her room as the two girls ran into the forest hand in hand. She’d never seen Bette so happy or cheerful in all her days. Elizabeth knew from the first time she’d seen her daughter’s face after meeting the blonde maiden, Bette was in love. This worried and enthralled the Queen all at the same time; she had never known a romance such as this or heard talk of one. Elizabeth did know that this wouldn’t be accepted amongst the people or gods. Despite seeing her daughter happy, she had to do something that would distract Bette away from Tina.
Tina held Bette’s bow in her hand staring at the thick golden frame admiring its power. “Here, I’ll show you how to hold it” the brunette stood behind the blonde and slid her mocha arms down Tina’s until she gripped the small white hands on the bow. The blonde gasped slightly as she felt the warmth emanating from the warrior’s body. Her eyes scanned down the brunette’s body as she let Bette guide her arms into place. Bette could feel Tina’s eyes on her body and turned her face to the blonde’s. “Are we paying attention?” Bette asked playfully. Tina slightly leaned into the warm embrace and smiled looking at the hazelnut eyes staring back. “Bette…” Tina whispered and the brunette met the blonde’s gaze. Seconds seemed to turn into a lifetime as they stared into each other’s eyes. Bette released her grip on the bow and the blonde did the same. The brunette gently turned Tina’s face towards hers and as their lips met sparks seemed to ignite their bodies. When they parted from the kiss it was only to retrieve air in their lungs. Bette smiled and opened her eyes to see a worried look on the blonde’s face. She brushed a stray piece of hair behind Tina’s hair and furrowed her brows curiously “Tina, what is wrong?” The blonde smiled weakly and dropped her gaze to the ground “I’m not worthy of you Bette. You’re so kind and noble when I’m just a peasant girl. I’m scared and worried. What will they think? What will they say?” The brunette lifted her chin and gave her the biggest smile she could manage “Tina, my heart belonged to you the moment I laid eyes upon you. You’re so much more than a peasant girl. And as for the people, don’t worry about them, I’ve got the people under control” Bette replied and wrapped her arms around Tina’s small gorgeous body. The blonde laid her head on the brunette’s shoulder and sighed deeply “What about the gods?” Tina whispered. “Zeus is my father. Athena, Aphrodite, Vulcan, and Mercury are my siblings. The gods are in my favor. Let me take care of you Tina. I want to make sure you’re treated like a queen and shown your true worth” Bette gently rubbed the blonde’s creamy skin on her back that was exposed. “Promise me something, Bette” Tina asked looking at the warrior intently. The brunette nodded and replied “Anything for you.” Tina brushed her knuckles along Bette’s mocha cheeks and played with a stray brown curl that had fallen in the brunette’s face. “Promise me you’ll never leave my side” the blonde asked tears forming in her eyes. Bette smiled and took Tina’s face between her palms “I promise Tina” she kissed the blonde passionately.
For months they kept their relationship a secret. Sometimes sneaking out of the palace late at night to take walks and hold each other on the shores. Bette found herself falling deeper in love with the blonde maiden every day; Tina found her feelings doing the same for the brunette, Bette was her hero, her lover, and best friend. They shared their secrets with each other, their weaknesses, and their desires. Nothing was uncommon ground for them and when Tina would start to feel insecure or pull away out of fear, Bette would bring her back. They were truly opposites but as they say, opposites attract and their love was mightier than any force on earth. Bette recalled the story of Zeus, her father, and how he came to make man. In the beginning, man had four arms, four legs, and two faces on one head. Fearing their power, Zeus split them into two separate beings, dooming them to spend their whole lives in search for their other halve. Bette believed Tina was her other half, she believed with it with every fiber of her being. Thus making the brunette reclaim her destiny, it was not to be the greatest warrior of earth, it was to care for the woman she loved and live life to the upmost. Bette knew the dangers of claiming her love for the blonde in front of the gods and people. However, she did not care, if this love was forbidden by the gods then why make it so possible? Why make it so easy? Love was not a trick, game, nor did it have certain rules. Love was finding that one person who completed you. Bette knew that person was her Tina. She would challenge any man or god to prove her love. The day would come when their relationship would be casted upon the ears of peasants and gods. That day, Bette would turn the other cheek to criticism and fight for their right to wed. She was the only heir to Nephteus’s throne and her beloved blonde maiden would serve as Ithaca’s other Queen. They would rule for many years, together and in love, Bette just knew. However, what the brunette didn’t know was Juno had other plans for her.
